Granada was first settled by prehistoric tribes, who named it Ilbyr. Later, the Romans built a city here, calling it Illibris. Its current name comes from the Arabic name, Gharnatha. Granada is famous as the capital of Moorish Spain, the site of the Alhambra, and the location of one of the last bastions of Moorish presence on the peninsula. Today it is a university town and the primary city of its province, also called Granada, and one of the main cities of Andalucía.
