Madrid is the capital of Spain, and with a population exceeding 3 million, its largest city. The city became important in 1561 when the monarch moved his court here from Toledo, but it was only in the 19th and 20th centuries that it became a major industrial center. Madrid gets its name from a 9th century Moorish fortress here called Majerit.
