The city of Barcelona was founded around 230 BCE by the Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca, Hannibal's father. It was first called simply Barca or Barcino. From the time of Augustus until the year 414 CE, it was a Roman colony called Julia Faventia. When the Visigoths took over, the town was called Barcinona.
